LED Grow Light Installation Guide

Proper installation of LED grow lights is critical for achieving the PPFD levels and uniformity that commercial crops require. This installation guide covers the essential parameters for professional LED grow light installation.

**Determining Mounting Height**

Mounting height directly affects PPFD intensity and coverage area. As a general rule, LED grow lights should be positioned 30-60cm above the plant canopy. Specific recommendations: quantum boards for vegetative growth at 45-60cm, quantum boards for flowering at 30-45cm, foldable spider fixtures at 30-60cm depending on wattage, and greenhouse top lights at 1.5-4m above canopy.

**Calculating Fixture Spacing**

Spacing between fixtures determines PPFD uniformity. As a starting guideline: space 600W fixtures 80-100cm apart, 800W fixtures 100-120cm apart, and 1000W fixtures 120-150cm apart in indoor rooms with reflective walls. For greenhouses with less wall reflection, reduce spacing by 15-20%.

**Hanging Hardware and Structural Requirements**

LED grow lights are significantly lighter than HPS equivalents (3-8kg versus 15-25kg), but proper hanging hardware remains essential. Use adjustable rope ratchets or chain hangers rated for at least 3x the fixture weight. Ensure the ceiling structure can support the total load.

**Electrical Installation**

LED fixtures draw less current than equivalent HPS lamps. Calculate total circuit load: a 1000W fixture on 240V draws 4.2A, so a 20A circuit can safely power four fixtures. Use the correct cable gauge: 14 AWG for circuits under 15A, 12 AWG for 15-20A circuits.

**Testing and Commissioning**

After installation, verify performance before introducing plants. Use a quantum PAR sensor to measure PPFD at multiple points across the canopy area. Calculate uniformity ratio (minimum / average) which should exceed 0.8 for commercial production.
