A certification logo on a brochure is not enough. Compliance is tied to an exact model, configuration, applicant or manufacturer, standard edition and market. This guide helps commercial growers, distributors and importers ask for the right evidence before comparing quotations.
which documents matter?
For a North American commercial project, start with a current NRTL listing for the exact horticultural luminaire—commonly UL or ETL to an applicable standard such as ANSI/CAN/UL 8800—plus wet/damp-location suitability and local code review. For the EU, request the EU Declaration of Conformity, the applicable directive or regulation list, and supporting safety, EMC and RoHS evidence. If a rebate or tender requires it, verify the exact model on the DLC Horticultural QPL. Performance claims should be supported by complete luminaire reports, not component reports alone.

United States & Canada
Confirm an accepted safety listing for the exact model and installation, local electrical-code requirements, applicable FCC obligations, and DLC status only when a specification or incentive program calls for it.
European Union
Request the EU Declaration of Conformity, technical-documentation support, product traceability, instructions and labelling. Confirm the directives and standards that actually apply to the model and use case.
Other markets
Australia/New Zealand, the UK, Japan and other markets have their own safety, EMC, importer and registration requirements. Do not assume CE or an NRTL mark automatically opens every market.
Eight-step document review workflow

- Freeze the exact configuration.
Record model code, wattage, input voltage, driver, cord/plug, controls, mounting hardware and wet/damp-location requirement. - Ask for traceable identifiers.
Request the certification file or control number—not only a logo, screenshot or PDF filename. - Search the official directory yourself.
Match the company, model family, suffixes, standard and current status. - Compare certificate coverage with the quotation.
A report for 600 W does not automatically cover a 720 W variant, a different driver or private-label model. - Review labels and installation instructions.
Ratings, warnings, traceability and installation limits should agree with the directory record and quotation. - Separate safety from performance.
Request complete photometric or horticultural performance reports alongside, not instead of, safety evidence. - Check the certificate owner and factory relationship.
If the seller is not the certificate holder, obtain written authorization and confirm the listed manufacturing site. - Make compliance part of the purchase order.
Attach approved model numbers and documents, define substitution controls and reserve pre-shipment inspection rights.
Common document gaps
- “UL/ETL certified” without a searchable file number or with a number belonging to another company.
- “CE certified” supported only by a generic logo sheet, with no EU Declaration of Conformity for the exact model.
- An LM-80 component report presented as proof that the complete fixture will last 50,000 or 100,000 hours.
- A DLC listing for a similar wattage or brand, not the model on the quotation.
- Test reports with cropped headers, missing laboratory accreditation, inconsistent model codes or outdated standard references.
- Certification charges requested after the order even though the listing was advertised as already included.
Frequently asked questions
No. UL and Intertek issue different certification marks. A product may be evaluated by either organization to the same applicable safety standard. For a grow light, verify the actual standard, mark, model and directory record rather than demanding both logos by default.
Not by default. CE marking is the manufacturer's declaration of conformity with applicable EU requirements. Third-party testing can support the technical file, but the buyer should ask for the EU Declaration of Conformity and model-specific evidence.
No. DLC qualification and NRTL safety listing serve different purposes. A project may require both, and the exact model must be checked in each relevant directory.
Sometimes, but only when the certification program and file explicitly cover the alternate brand or model designation. Obtain written evidence; do not assume identical appearance means identical certification coverage.
Ask for a complete, model-specific horticultural photometric report from a competent laboratory, with electrical input, spectrum, PPF and efficacy data under stated conditions. LM-79 can support complete-luminaire measurements, while LM-80 is component maintenance data.
